Claude Duet vs Claude Commerce: Same Company, Different Jobs — One Assistant, One Blueprint.

Claude Commerce is not Claude Duet. Duet is Anthropic's proactive assistant app; Commerce is a free blueprint for developers building shopping agents. Same company, different jobs. This Claude Duet vs Claude Commerce comparison exists because the names invite exactly the wrong shortcut: two Anthropic products, both described as agents, announced seven weeks apart, and easy to merge into one imaginary product. One is an app a subscriber uses. The other is code a team builds with.

The dates keep the two apart. Anthropic published the Commerce blueprint on 2 September 2026 and opened the Duet research preview on 21 October 2026. Neither is new today. The confusion is the story: similar names, shared company, and the word "agent" doing different work in each case.

Claude Duet is the assistant that comes to you

Claude Duet is a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. Anthropic built it, in its words, "for professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track." It is a standalone app on iOS and Android, and it runs on claude.ai, separate from the main Claude app. Anthropic designed it around Claude Opus 5.5, to decide what needs the user, what can wait, and when to check first.

Each morning, Duet sends a short brief on the most important items across the user's connected apps. Through the day it checks those accounts every few hours and messages only when something needs a decision. It keeps working on delegated tasks on its own virtual machine, with its own browser, even when the user steps away. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it waits for approval.

Duet draws on the user's existing Claude account: memory, skills, and connected apps carry over. Anthropic says it can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. The Claude Duet vs Commerce difference starts here: Duet acts for one subscriber, inside that subscriber's own work accounts.

Access is narrow. The research preview is available by waitlist for Pro and Max subscribers in the US — the live announcement also lists Ultra plans — and Anthropic says Duet is included in those plans and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. No separate Duet price is stated in the announcement, and none is given here. Anthropic is also plain that this is an early version: Duet may misread a thread or misjudge urgency, and it cannot yet show the user its browser.

Claude Commerce is the blueprint a developer builds from

Claude Commerce shopping agents explained in one line: Anthropic published code and patterns so a retailer's own engineering team can build shopping agents, rather than a finished shopping product anyone can open. The announcement calls it "a blueprint to help build commerce agents on Claude," containing "the harnesses, patterns, and guardrails an engineering team needs to get a commerce agent running in days." The audience is developers and the businesses that employ them, not shoppers.

Claude Commerce Agents explained in full sits in our earlier explainer; the short version is two agents. The shopping agent lives inside the merchant's own app or website. A customer can ask for a set of items for a trip, and the agent searches the catalogue, assembles the set, remembers preferences, and hands the cart to checkout. Payment is not the agent's job: the blueprint "leaves payment to you, whether that is your existing checkout or an agentic payments provider."

The merchant agent faces the other way. It supports the people running the store: answering questions about sales performance from the store's own data, tracking inventory, recommending pricing and promotions, and drafting marketing campaigns. When it proactively suggests a change, a person approves it before anything goes live.

The code is the Claude Commerce GitHub blueprint: the public repository anthropics/commerce-agents, created on 1 September 2026 under the Apache License 2.0. When checked at 03:07 PKT on 1 November 2026, it had 3,385 stars and 694 forks, with a single commit. The README states: "This is a reference implementation; it is not maintained and does not accept contributions." A team adopts it by forking it and connecting its own catalogue, cart, and checkout. The demo data is fictional — the only company is ACME — and nothing in the demos places an order, charges a card, or changes a live listing.

Two launch figures need care. Coverage of the launch reported Anthropic saying that retailers already running Claude-based shopping agents had seen baskets grow by as much as 35 percent and shoppers become about 60 percent more likely to complete a purchase. According to that coverage, Anthropic's head of product for the Claude platform, Angela Jiang, told Reuters the cart figure came from one partner. The company has not named the retailers or published methodology, so the numbers are company-reported, not a benchmark. Anthropic's own announcement does not publish them at all.

"Free" needs the same boundary. The blueprint and its code are free under the Apache 2.0 licence. That does not mean running a shopping agent costs nothing: the demos need an Anthropic API key, per the repository's own quick start. Anthropic's Duet proactive agent vs Commerce blueprint contrast is sharpest on cost: Duet is included in a subscription a person already pays for; Commerce is free code that still takes paid work to turn into a working store agent.

Side by side: different users, different jobs, no winner

The table below uses only the two Anthropic announcements and the repository.

There is no winner here, because there is no contest. A subscriber cannot use Commerce to get a morning brief, and a developer cannot fork Duet to build a store agent. Comparing them as rivals mistakes a shared name for a shared job.

Where Walmart fits — and where it does not

Walmart AI shopping agents are a separate programme from both Anthropic products: on 21 October 2026, Walmart announced it would welcome approved AI shopping agents into its store through its own Agent Gateway, with rules and spending controls. It is not Duet, which works for a subscriber, and it is not Commerce, which is the blueprint a team could build an agent from.

Key Takeaways

  • Claude Commerce is not Claude Duet. Duet is Anthropic's proactive assistant app; Commerce is a free blueprint for developers building shopping agents. Same company, different jobs.
  • Duet (21 October 2026) is a research-preview app on Opus 5.5, by waitlist for US Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers, sending a morning brief and waiting for approval before sending, paying, signing, or deleting.
  • Commerce (2 September 2026) is a blueprint in the public repository anthropics/commerce-agents (3,385 stars, 694 forks at 03:07 PKT on 1 November 2026), Apache 2.0, a reference implementation that is not maintained.
  • The blueprint holds a shopping agent inside a merchant's own app and a merchant agent for store staff, with a person approving changes before they go live. It is not a store or checkout.
  • The 35 percent and 60 percent figures are company-reported, from one unnamed partner via Reuters, and do not appear in Anthropic's own Commerce announcement. Treat them as claims, not benchmarks.
  • There is no winner: Duet serves a subscriber, Commerce serves a building team. Walmart's separate agent gateway is a third, different thing.

Conclusion

Keep the test simple: if you would use it yourself, you are thinking of Duet. If a team would build with it, you are thinking of Commerce. Everything else — waitlists, forks, approvals, and gateways — follows from that one distinction.
